Die elementare chemische Zusammensetzung von Edelstahl besteht hauptsächlich aus Eisen (Fe) und Chrom (Cr). Weitere Legierungselemente in der chemischen Zusammensetzung umfassen auch Kohlenstoff (C), Silizium (Si), Mangan (Mn), Phosphor (P). Schwefel (S), Nickel (Ni), Molybdän (Mo), Titan (Ti), Stickstoff (N) und Kupfer (Cu) usw. Erst wenn die Cr-Prozentzusammensetzung einen bestimmten Wert erreicht, weist der Stahl Korrosionsbeständigkeit auf. Daher hat Edelstahlmetall im Allgemeinen einen Chromgehalt von mindestens 10,5 %.
